THE GAMUDA PARKS (G-PARKS) RANGER APRIL WORKSHOPS FOR THE JUNIOR RANGERS

20TH April 2019, Kuala Lumpur – EcoKnights, in partnership with Gamuda Land continued their GParks Rangers programme catered specifically for children aged 5 to 12 years old for April with two enticing Eco-workshops. This is part of the long running and on-going program to engage children in experiential learning for sustainable living. The first session was a composting workshop held on the 20th of April and the second was a soap-making workshop on the 27th of April, both of which turned out to be a great success!

The composting workshop on the 20th April, which happened at Taman Tugu, saw 11 inquisitive Junior Rangers joining us to learn about sustainable organic waste management through garden composting. They went through the process of making their own compost-in-a-container model and were reminded that the part of food which we don’t consume are as equally valuable as those that we do eat. The workshop combined hands-on preparation of the compost and also practical tips on how to optimise the decomposition of organic waste, all presented in ways that kept every kid’s curiosity engaged.

The second workshop, that was focused on soap-making from used cooking oil, was held on the 27th at Taman Tugu for 26 more little rangers. They learnt the step-by-step process of making a household soap with used cooking oil for recycling purpose, and how it is a sustainable practice that prevents cooking oil from being discarded down the drain and polluting our waterways and rivers. The workshop started off with a brief introduction on the concept and basics of soap-making, which was then followed by a demonstration of each step as we walked participants through the process.

Parents and children alike joined in the experience, and it was very encouraging as well as refreshing to see their enthusiasm and eagerness in trying their hands at these new activities, which would help them to be better stewards of our planet. At the end of the event, every ranger had succeeded in producing their own project that they could bring home. Overall, both events went smoothly and our bright little rangers walked away with not just their self-made soaps but also a sprouting idea on living in harmony with the nature.
